In Tarot, III The Empress, reveals feminine power, not in a physical or politcal sense, but related to the power of reproduction, growth and the fertility of ideas. Three is the number of trinity - father, mother, and the son. The Empress expresses all that is meant by this fruitful union on the material plane. The virgin High Priestess has now become the Earth Mother, the multiplier of images. The subconscious has developed the seed-thought planted in it, and now we have the material results.

This number has mystical qualities which arise from many cultures. Folk-tales have many threes, be they sisters, truths, wishes or questions. In Christian religion, we have the Holy Trinity of Father, Son and Holy Ghost. The human mind seems to have an innate conception of 3, relating to completeness. 3 represents yesterday, today and tomorrow; or past, present and future. 3 represents positive, comparative and superlative, also represents beginning, middle and the end. Three dimensions encapsulate physical space.

Three was significance may be because in many countries where civilisation began there were three seasons, Spring (Growth), Summer (Fruitfulness), and Winter (Sleep). In Greek mythology, the earth goddess Rhea gave birth to three sons: Hades, Poseidon and Zeus. and there are the Three Graces. Throughout the world's many cultures, 3 is a number of immense power and significance. As Agrippa of Nettesheim says: 'The number of three is an incompounded number, a holy number, a number of perfection, a most powerful number ... this number conduceth to the ceremonies of God'. In the Bible, 3 is the first trinity, that of Adam, Eve and the first child, marking realisation of three states of mind, subconscious, conscious, and superconscious.

In modern numerology, 3 is always auspicious and welcome. 3 is associated with fertility, creativity, generation and regeneration, completeness, fulfilment, youth and accomplishment. Esoterically, 3 represents perfection, harmony, family, equilibrium; the primary colours, blue, red and yellow; the fruit of the tree; resurrection from death; enlightenment. It is the paradigm of life itself: father, mother, child; seed, spirit new growth; beginning, middle, end; the eternal cycle.

People governs by this number has great intelligence and wisdom, a love of life and a strong sexual appetites. The urge to reporduce is great. The physique will be solid, but can go to fat if enough care is not taken. The personality is totally outgoing, to the point that being alone is not favoured. The mind could border on the acquiring knowledge. The colour of number 3, is purple, though imperial, can also mar the complexion, warning of being too-extrovert, too fond of food and drink.

People of number three are brilliant, imaginative, versatile and energetic. They express themselves boldly, vividly and on all possible occassions. Three sparkle and glitter. Witty, lively, charming, they are likely to be extremely successful in life. They are often highly talented, especially in the arts. They take things lightly and easily and they tend to be lucky - they seem to succeed without really trying.
